Household 4417-B
A domestic receiver recorded K. Watanabe arriving home at 02:40. His wife later asked this archive whether his glasses had ever been found.
The tape

Kokushi company housing included a fixed domestic receiver for Pacific Leisure FM. According to Employee Monitoring indexes, the receivers also listened.
The corporation’s current Colleague Life programme combines housing, household alignment and centrally managed restoration in one record. Its Settlement District 11 announcement says every home is identical and that residents report “no measurable change” after relocation.
The index entry reads:
HOUSEHOLD 4417-B · 02:40 · RETURN LOGGED · SPOUSE QUERY REGARDING EYEWEAR: NOTED · FAMILY ADJUSTMENT WITHIN TOLERANCE
One word on the index card has been blacked out by hand, below the stamp: 鍵 2 / 3 · KAERU
The tape itself is in Japanese. I am publishing only the last two lines.
4417-B: もう寝なさい。すべて許容範囲内だ。
WIFE: ……それ、ラジオで言ってることと同じ。
The glasses
Every photograph of K. Watanabe before August 1986 shows him in thick, research-grade spectacles, the Kokushi-issue kind. He could not read without them.
After August 1986 there are no photographs of him wearing glasses.
The witness
In 2011 a woman who gave her married name as Watanabe wrote to this archive. She did not ask about Floor 14. She asked one question:
“Were his glasses ever found?”
She told me her husband came home that night soaked through, smelling of the copier room, and never needed his glasses again. She said he stopped talking in his sleep. She said that, after a while, she stopped noticing.
Box 4417 is said to contain “spectacles, Kokushi-issue, research grade.” The household copy was “issued without spectacles.” I didn’t understand the second phrase until I read the first.
